Does your career have to provide meaning?

I often have conversations with friends, clients and students around career.

It turns out, many people get to their mid 20’s - 30’s and figure out that they’ve chosen the wrong path.

Society tricks us into believing that happiness is found in climbing the ladder — finish school, go to university, get a job, get a promotion, get married, buy a house, have a baby.

And for some of us it is. But for many of us, we get so focused on what others are telling us to do, that we don’t actually check in with our own interests, values and strengths.

However, lately there has been a huge emphasis on meaningful work.

“Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life!!!!” (This is 100% a myth, by the way).

Because of these narratives around purpose and meaning, anyone that doesn’t feel like their sole purpose lies in their work, develops a great sense of anxiety. Can you relate Hello?

So I want to offer you an alternative. What if meaningful work wasn’t the only way to find meaning in your life?

What if instead of putting all of your ‘purpose eggs’ into the one basket (your career), you started to diversify?

Meaning is found in many places. To name a few: deep social connection, a robust personal identity, small daily habits, creativity, nature and community engagement — to feel apart of a tribe.

I don’t suggest that you put up with a job that makes you miserable. But I do suggest that you spend time thinking about ALL the ways you can find meaning and purpose, not just relating to your career. Seek fulfilment in the little things.

I get that we spend A LOT of time at work. But if you’re able to shift your mindset and focus, I promise that you will be surprised at how much meaning you can find without actually changing jobs.

(If you’re interested in exploring your relationship to purpose and success, book a therapy session with me. I will help you gain a better understanding of yourself so that you can increase the mastery you have over your life.)
