How to find a better outlook on life
Here is a little look into the way I like to think about life, in the hope that you might take something from it and apply it to your own way of thinking. If you suffer from indecisiveness, like me, then you're going to want to read on...
As you guys know, I spend majority of my waking hours thinking about yoga, growth, self-development, philosophy and just generally ways to make life less hard. Growth and learning are some of my core values and they infiltrate through most of what I do.
Somewhere along my travels, this idea popped into my mind and I have done my best to adopt it ever since. It is the idea that life is just one big experiment.
It seems as though somewhere in our human development, someone has sold us the idea of the 'ideal life plan'. That by certain ages, we will attain certain things and be on a set path that will provide us with purpose, certainty and fulfilment. I am assuming that if you're the kind of the person reading this email, you would have figured out by now that it is a hoax.
But because this life plan is so deeply engrained in our culture, it can be really scary to experiment with things that fall outside of it. That is where my mindset comes in handy.
For those of us that are courageous enough to think and do things differently, making decisions can be really hard. Because when we forge a new path, there is no instruction manual. What I am learning is that there is no such thing as the right decision. When we see decisions are right or wrong, we set ourselves up for failure.
So what is the solution? To no longer seek the right answer. It doesn't exist.
Instead, I constantly remind myself, life is just one big experiment. You have to try different things, different techniques and strategies. Test hypotheses and make new discoveries. And like any experiment, some of them will work and some of them wont. Some of them will incur loss and some gain. When I allow myself to become experimental with life, there is way less pressure. Things can be more fun and playful. Curiosity triumphs over fear. Every now and again I will end up with a loss, but I trust that soon after I will have another gain, because that is the way life flows.
So if you're feeling unsure about things at the moment, finding it hard to choose, taking life too seriously, or just wanting to try something new, give it a shot. Ask yourself, what would I do if life was just one giant ongoing experiment, with no right answer.
What if every decision simply provides more data for the next decision?
